A Dream Portland Day

What an honor to be asked to share my version of a dream day in Portland! While there are oodles of ways to spend time in and around this sweet city, in my opinion there’s no better way to pass the time than treasure hunting and snacking along the way. Follow along for a handful of my favorite spots!

Because this is my version of an ideal day, allow me to set the mood. I’m envisioning a springy moment here in Portland—imagine it's overcast, temps are in the high 60's, flowers are bursting with delight, and the smell of fresh cut grass permeates the air.

I start off my day by enjoying a cup of coffee lovingly made by my partner, Henry. Having coffee in our house is made more fun by my ever-growing collection of vintage mugs that I've collected from thrift shops and estate sales over the years.

Speaking of estate sales, this dream day must include a visit to one! I start by checking Estate Sale Finder, which is a great resource for reliable info about estate sales in and around the area. I love that it allows ya to filter by location, specific days, or duration. It also offers photos of items up for grabs to preview before going, which I love because I am a visual person! If you are new to the estate sale game in Portland, it can get quite competitive and often lines form in the early morning hours to get first dibs. But fear not, I find that going a few hours after the start of the sale not only lets the crowds dissipate for a more peaceful experience, but it also gives those early birds a chance to dust off the shelves and expose different treasures for the taking.

*A few tips for estate sale-ing: bring reusable bags and cash (many sales dont take credit cards), dont be afraid to bargain (it's fun and encouraged!), make sure to explore the design of the home (I am always on the lookout for cool vintage wallpapers), Irvington or the Southwest Hills are my favorite neighborhoods for sales (but of course they exist all over the city), and the last day of an estate sale almost always offers half off all remaining items (yay!).

I worked up an appetite digging for treasures, so I make my way to Berlu Bakery in Southeast for some mid-morning treats. Berlu is a progressive Vietnamese bakery owned and operated by my friend, Vince Nguyen, one of the nicest guys in town (and also James Beard's 2023 Best Chef: Northwest and Pacific—NBD). Vince offers his take on traditional Vietnamese pastries, all of which happen to be dairy and gluten free! If you haven't been, ya gotta goooo! Open Saturdays and Sundays, only.

Fun, vintage mugs!

Next up on my list is a visit to Nationale, an art space / gallery in SE Portland. Stepping foot into this gem of a spot is a real dopamine hit. Of course, all the art is beautiful, but I think the reason I love it most is because something about Nationale offers me an opportunity to feel more connected with my own creativity. And that, folks, is priceless. Recently, I was fortunate enough to grab a limited edition print by one of my favorite local artists, Pace Taylor, who is represented by Nationale.

Right around the corner from Nationale is another joyful spot, Lowell. Also a gallery and treasure trove, Lowell is a collection of art, objects, and beautiful things collected from the owner's travels. Her selections always inspire me and transport me elsewhere, if only for a moment! It's a great spot for gifts so add it to your list. I was gifted this little handmade wooden Oaxcan mermaid bowl from Lowell years ago. It remains one of my favorite things in my home!

After some creative inspiration, it's time for lunch. I head over to Baker's Mark for a sando. I can't eat gluten, and after over a decade of searching high and low for the best gluten-free bread, I found it here. It's crunchy yet soft, flavorful yet not overpowering, and totally it's own thing. I highly recommend. And while we're on the subject of GF bread, honorable mention for next best is the new Sourdough Bread by Franz.

Then I quickly pop into Oko for another endorphine rush! Oko is a vintage and antique jewelry shop (also in Southeast) and they offer some of the most beautiful treasures you've ever laid your eyes on. If you havent already gathered, I have a real passion for vintage, antique, and secondhand things. Dont sleep on Oko if you love the same! The owner and her staff are incredibly kind, knowledgeable, and make fancy jewelry approachable.

I'm a North Portlander, so it's back up to my neck of the woods to spend some time in my best friend Ellio's yard and art studio. Ellio is a florist, flower farmer, and artist based in St. Johns. They are a human of many talents with the biggest heart. If you are in need of a floral arrangement, want to learn how to take a class on how to create your own florals, or are curious about caring for your plants, look no further! Or maybe you are interested in some new art for your walls? Check out their latest collection for Uprise Art

After a gossip in the garden, I meet back up with Henry for dinner. We head to Tehuana Oaxaca, located in the Arbor Look Food Cart Pod. Their food is so good and I'm not ashamed to say we get it almost once a week! I love the asada, the mole is unreal, and the beans are soupy (which is the best way for a bean to be if you ask me). We order some tacos and catch up on our days.

Last but not least, we cross the bridge for some Fifty Licks ice cream. I have a real sweet tooth and love a night drive, so we often combine the two for an after dinner treat. Fifty Licks is also great for the gluten free / dairy free folks, as many of their icecream flavors are one, the other, or both. Bonus: their waffle cones are also GF! Their Mango Sticky Rice (GF / Vegan) is what dreams are made of.

Now it's time to unwind with some trashy reality TV and snuggles with our kitty, Dwayne.

Thanks for following along for my ideal Portland day!
